Suzanne M. Leal is the director of the Center for Statistical Genetics and Professor of Molecular and Human Genetics, Baylor College of Medicine. She joined the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cologne in October this year as a Guest Professor.

Her interest lies in the mapping of complex and Mendelian traits and understanding the interactions between genes and between genes and the environment. She has studied a wide variety of phenotypes including autism, platelet reactivity, bipolar disorder, coronary diseases, and non-syndromic hearing impairment. Suzanne is also interested in methodological research. In the past years, her group has extensively developed methods in complex trait rare variant associations and disease gene identification.

Currently, Suzanne is involved in the analysis of several large-scale next-generation sequencing (NGS) projects. For example, she led the statistical analysis of National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) - Exome Sequencing Project (ESP), one of the first large-scale exome sequencing projects. Using data from ~6,800 exomes, the analysis was performed on >70 heart, blood, and lung-related traits.

Suzanne has also been actively involved in teaching and organizing courses in statistical genetics. For the past 20 years, she has organized and taught the "Advanced Gene Mapping Course" which is held annually at the Rockefeller University and the Max Delbrück Center in Berlin etc.
