This workshop explores the impact of unconscious bias and how it influences the academic work environment. Participants will gain both personal insights and empirical knowledge about discrimination and bias in the academic setting.

Dr. Isabel Fraas
Dr. Isabel Fraas works in the office of the University Women’s Representative at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU), where she is responsible for gender consulting for research associations and measures under the Professorinnenprogramm III. She advises and supports research groups in planning and implementing gender equality measures and serves as a point of contact for coordinators and researchers on all gender equality issues. Additionally, Isabel Fraas coordinates professional development offerings under the Gender Equality Academy, particularly the new Women’s Leadership Program for (junior) professors and research group leaders. Isabel Fraas holds a PhD in German studies. After working for several years in teaching and research at JMU’s Institute of German Philology, she transitioned into academic management, where she was responsible for training tutors under the JMU Quality Pact for Teaching program before moving into gender equality work. She has also held teaching assignments in academic writing at the universities of Würzburg and Koblenz-Landau, as well as in gender equality measures for DFG research groups at the ZWM Speyer. Since 2023, she has been responsible for developing and leading a central diversity management program at JMU Würzburg.
Dr. Anne Freese
Dr. Anne Freese works in human resources development at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), where she coordinates the Dual Career Office and the Diversity & Inclusion strategy. Her work focuses on diversity-sensitive HR processes, gender- and diversity-appropriate communication, and diversity-oriented organizational development. Most recently, she coordinated the diversity survey on equal opportunities and participation at DESY. Previously, she worked in the office of the Central Women’s Representative at Humboldt University of Berlin, where she was responsible for the GeCo-GenderConsulting advisory service. In this role, she advised coordinators of research groups on gender equality concepts in research proposals and the implementation of group- and target-specific gender equality measures. She is also the developer of the METIS project for research groups at Humboldt University. Anne Freese studied Modern and Contemporary History, Gender Studies, and Musicology at Humboldt University of Berlin, where she also completed her PhD at the Institute for History. She has served as a lecturer and commission member for the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes), as a lecturer at Humboldt University, and as an instructor for the Center for Science Management in Speyer (ZWM).
