Bengt Belgardt wins the Körber Foundation - German Thesis Award
First prize in the Science and Technology section was awarded to Dr Bengt Belgardt from the research team of Prof. Jens Brüning for his dissertation on the topic “Obesity and diabetes mellitus - neuronal inflammation as a cause”. He has identified molecular signaling pathways in the brain that regulate food intake, body weight and blood sugar levels. His findings provide a basis for new approaches to the widespread diseases diabetes mellitus and obesity
Every year the Körber Foundation awards the prize, worth 30,000 Euros, to young scientists for excellent theses of particular relevance to society. Patron of the competition is President of the Bundestag, Norbert Lammert.
A total of 469 doctoral students took part this year. Besides the winning top three prizes, second prize was awarded to six further researchers. The award ceremony, presided over by Bundestag President Norbert Lammert, will take place on 8th November at the German Parliamentary Society in Berlin.
