At its 37th annual meeting in Nuremberg, the German Society for Ophthalmic Surgery (DOC) awarded the DOC Research Prize to Prof. Dr. Claus Cursiefen, Director of the Center for Ophthalmology at Cologne University Hospital, for his achievements in the field of corneal transplant surgery and transplant immunology. Laudator Dr. Peter Hoffmann (Castrop-Rauxel) praised Prof. Cursiefen as a “leading expert in the field of corneal research and surgery”. With his work, he had helped shape German ophthalmology internationally. “Under his leadership, the University Eye Hospital Cologne became the largest center for corneal transplants in Europe,” the laudator continued.
Significant parts of the award-winning work were also researched in the context of the DFG research group 2240 and the SFB 1607 at the Center for Ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Cologne (www.crc1607.de). After the SFB 539 in Erlangen for research into glaucoma (1997-2009), the current SFB 1607 is only the second ophthalmological SFB in the history of the German Research Foundation (DFG).
