Dr. Christian Reinhardt awarded scientific research prize of the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation
CECAD Junior Group Leader Dr. Christian Reinhardt (Department of Internal Medicine I) has won an award worth 10,000 Euros for his development of innovative approaches to the treatment of cancer patients. He will receive the prestigious research prize at the official award ceremony in Regensburg in July 2012.
The work of Reinhardt’s research team is aimed at identifying the genetic changes that lead to tumor growth and finding ways of exploiting such changes for therapeutic purposes. Personalized treatment, based on a patient’s specific tumor mutations, promises to provide a more direct and less harmful form of therapy, specifically targeting and destroying the mutation-bearing tumor cells while sparing healthy tissue surrounding the tumor.
