The interdisciplinary team of Natalia Kononenko, Veerle Visser-Vandewalle and Pablo Andrade from the Faculty of Medicine as well as Marcus Krüger from the Institute for Genetics has something to celebrate: Saskia received a scholarship from the Hans Böckler Foundation for her PhD project which focuses on developing a new method to utilize single-used surgical instruments of deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedures for proteomic analysis. Saskia will examine living brain tissue samples from patients with various neurological conditions, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Disease. Using liquid-chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and bioinformatics, the research aims to identify disease-specific protein changes and identify potential biomarkers for neurodegenerative disorders.
