Univ.-Prof. Dr. Oliver A. Cornely, Director of Translational Research at the CECAD Cluster of Excellence and Scientific Director of the Clinical Trials Center Cologne (ZKS Köln) at the University Hospital and Faculty of Medicine, has been elected President of the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM). The announcement was made during the 22nd ISHAM Congress in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil.
ISHAM is the world’s leading scientific society in the field of medical and veterinary mycology. It brings together research, education, and clinical practice to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of fungal infections globally.
In his three-year term, Cornely will help shape the strategic and scientific direction of the society, with a strong focus on international collaboration, transparent knowledge-sharing, and the development of clinically relevant standards. Supporting early-career researchers, strengthening global guidelines, and improving fungal diagnostics and treatment in resource-limited settings will also be key priorities.
Cornely is a specialist in internal medicine, infectious diseases, hematology, and oncology, with additional qualifications in emergency medicine and medical mycology. His research focuses on invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, antimicrobial resistance, and the development of international guidelines. As former President of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM), he initiated the ECMM Global Guideline Program and the ECMM Excellence Center Initiative, which audits and certifies clinical and laboratory centers worldwide.
His election marks the appointment of a globally recognized clinical mycology expert to the helm of the field’s most important international organization.
