Univ.-Prof. Dr. Oliver A. Cornely, Director of Translational Research at the CECAD Cluster of Excellence and Scientific Director of the Center for Clinical Trials (ZKS) Cologne at the University Hospital and Medical Faculty of Cologne, has been awarded the Dr. Gerald P. Bodey, Sr., Memorial Distinguished Visiting Professorship Award by the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Named after the American oncologist and infectious disease specialist Dr. Gerald P. Bodey (1934–2020), the award is one of the most prestigious honors in the field and recognizes outstanding contributions to research and education.
The award ceremony took place on June 17 during the Division of Cancer Medicine Grand Rounds at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. As this year’s awardee, Prof. Cornely delivered the Bodey Lecture titled:
“Hematological cancer and infectious disease – Navigating our patients between Scylla and Charybdis.”
His lecture addressed current challenges in treating immunocompromised patients, the importance of anti-infective therapeutic strategies, and recent developments in drug research.
With this award, the MD Anderson Cancer Center honors individuals who have made significant advancements in the field of infectious diseases. Prof. Cornely is the first physician based in Germany to receive this distinction.
Dr. Gerald P. Bodey is considered a pioneer in modern infection management in cancer care. His work, particularly in the treatment of patients with neutropenia, continues to shape clinical standards around the world.
