Big Curiosity, Bright Futures: Students Discover Science at CECAD

03.04.2025 2025 GADIS Public Outreach

For Girls’ and Boys’ Day 2025, students got hands-on with science at CECAD and discovered how exciting research careers can be.

On April 3rd, CECAD opened its lab doors to 15 curious students between the ages of 14 and 15 as part of Girls' and Boys' Day 2025, welcoming them into the vibrant world of aging research. In close collaboration with the Uniklinik Köln, the young visitors got an exclusive glimpse into cutting-edge biomedical science and had the chance to become researchers for a day.

Three of our research groups, led by Prof. Niessen, Prof. Schumacher, and Prof. Krueger, hosted the students and guided them through hands-on activities. From staining and examining cancerous skin cells under the microscope, to discovering hidden bacteria on fingerprints, extracting DNA, and separating proteins using gel electrophoresis. Every station was a journey into the microscopic world that shapes our health.

The highlight for many? Watching glowing worms under a microscope and learning how tiny organisms can help us understand the biology of aging.

A big thank you to Gladiola, Nadine, Michael, Saskia, Christina, and Tahira for guiding the students with passion and patience. Your enthusiasm made the day unforgettable!

Through this Girls' and Boys' Day experience, students not only uncovered some of the mysteries of science, but also saw how exciting and diverse a career in research can be!
