Anne Schaefer, director at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Election is considered one of the highest honors in the biomedical science and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

Schaefer was elected for her pioneering work in molecular neurobiology. Her research has revealed how microglia, the immune cells of the brain, regulate neuronal activity and help preserve neuronal identity. She has also uncovered epigenetic mechanisms that contribute to neuronal longevity, identified neuroprotective microglial states and opened new perspectives on immunotherapy-based approaches to Alzheimer’s disease.

"It is a great honor for me to have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine and to join this community of outstanding scientists," says Schaefer.

The National Academy of Medicine announced its newly elected members on October 19, 2026, during its annual meeting. New members are selected in recognition of their major contributions to the advancement of medical science, health care and public health.

With this election, Schaefer joins a distinguished group of scientists, whose work has had a significant impact on human health.
