Europe is facing rapidly accelerating population aging, which is driving multimorbidity and unsustainable healthcare costs. In a paper published in “Mechanisms of Ageing and Development”, Björn Schumacher, Oliver Cornely, along with other renowned scientists in the aging field, are urging the establishment of an EU Coordination and Support Program on Healthy Aging and Longevity.

As the scientists point out, age-related illnesses impose a heavy financial burden on the healthcare system. European research cooperation on aging could play a leading role in addressing this challenge. Extending healthy life expectancy in old age not only improves the quality of life in Europe but also eases the burden on the healthcare system. While the EU strongly invests in disease-specific research, there is currently no dedicated coordination and support framework that systematically targets the biological, social, and systemic drivers of aging across diseases, sectors, and Member States.

Key measures could include promoting interdisciplinary research, developing common standards and biomarkers, strengthening data sharing, and creating a European ecosystem for healthy longevity.
