CECAD Summer Retreat 2024

Friday August 23rd, 2024

Come and join us for a full day of science and celebration at CECAD!

WRISTBANDS / BÄNDCHEN SALE (for FOOD & DRINKS)

Starting from Monday July 15th, you can purchase the wristbands for food and drinks at the CECAD entrance during working hours (Herr Muhr & Herr Pexa). You will need to be there in person, as registration occurs by signing up on the participation list.
The total number of wristbands is limited and they can be bought ONLY until August 16th!

Wristbands (5 € adults, 3€ children) are the pre-requirement to get food & drinks.

Together with the wristbands, you will receive vouchers which you need to pick up food and drinks.
You will receive:

  • 2x vouchers for sausages (vegan, poultry or swine)
  • 2x for salad/antipasti
  • 1x free meal choice
  • 6x beer vouchers (on the event you can get a wine glass by using 2x beer vouchers)

Children do only get the meal vouchers. Non-alcoholic drinks are available for everyone who has a ribbon, no voucher is needed.

KEYNOTE LECTURES

Prof. Dr. Arantza Barrios is an Associate Professor in Cell & Developmental Biology at University College London. Her research focuses on understanding how neural circuits in the brain process sensory stimuli into diverse behavioral outputs, a key aspect of learning and decision-making. Barrios’ lab investigates the functional plasticity of neural circuits, influenced by reinforcing experiences, internal states of arousal, and sexual dimorphism. They use the nematode C. elegans as their experimental model due to its simple neural structure and high behavioral plasticity. Their methodologies include behavioral genetic screens, GCaMP recordings, and optogenetics to explore how complex behaviors emerge from neural dynamics at the molecular and single-cell levels.

More information about her work is available at www.barrioslab.org.

Prof. Dr. Jörg Höhfeld is a group leader and researcher at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, focusing on protein homeostasis in cells. His work centers on understanding how molecular chaperones maintain proteome integrity by recognizing, preventing aggregation, and promoting the proper folding of proteins under stress. When proteins are terminally damaged, chaperones aid in their disposal. This quality control system is crucial, as misfolded proteins can lead to diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Dr. Höhfeld’s research employs biochemical and cell biological experiments, using model organisms like fruit flies and mice to study the mechanisms of protein quality control and its regulation in diseases. His studies aim to uncover new therapeutic approaches for protein-aggregation diseases.

More information can be found at his lab’s website, AG-hoehfeld.

GET-TOGETHER

After the talks, from 18:00, we will meet to celebrate with food, drinks, music, and community games (human-table-soccer and karaoke).

The traditional Bratwurst will be served together with fresh drinks, alcohol-free drinks as well as poultry, vegan meal options. A limited amount of gluten-free bread will be available for the Bratwurst - ask for it at the grill stand.

Let’s avoid FOOD WASTE!
